I recently did a food demo at the beautiful corporate offices of Fashion House. They requested smoothies for their employees to sample at the annual health fair, so I was happy to haul my Ninja down to Chelsea to whip up some frosty treats. Cooking demos are one of my favorite things to do because of the amazing feedback I get from my taste-testers. People are always surprised at how good my simple, healthy recipes taste!

Smoothies can be a disaster for anyone who is trying to lose weight or who has blood sugar issues, so I’m careful about recommending them to my clients. I advise that you avoid chain smoothie shops where they add in loads of sugar and instead make your own at home. Making smoothies is quick, easy, and kids love them! You’ll see from the following recipes that I don’t use any added sugar and I use moderate amounts of fruit. I also recommend using unsweetened milk substitutes and keeping your portion sizes small to avoid sugar overload.

To my amazement, this was the favorite of the two smoothies! I’m always happy when people get an extra dose of greens, so this was a win for me!

Tropical Green Smoothie
6-8 oz. unsweetened coconut milk
1 cup frozen pineapple
1 cup frozen mangos
1 cup baby spinach
*Optional: ¼ cup ice for additional frostiness. 🙂
A very close and decadent second place – this smoothie is a chocolate lovers delight! Cacao is full of antioxidants, protein and micronutrients that you won’t get from a Hershey bar. 😉

Chocolate Raspberry Smoothie
6-8 oz. chocolate coconut milk
1 tablespoon cacao powder
1 cup frozen raspberries
1 heaping tablespoon sunflower seed butter
½ cup ice
I used coconut milk in both recipes because of potential tree nut allergies, but you could replace with unsweetened almond, hemp, or rice milk. Also, if you’re not a fan of sunflower seed butter, replace with any other nut/seed butter for added richness.
